II. Introduction

A. What is mIRC?
Well, basically mIRC is a program that lets you talk to other people all around the world. Depending on what server you connect to, it could be in any language. mIRC connects to an IRC server (there are lots out there, they’re mostly listed at www.ircsearch.com or www.ircspy.com)

B. What does IRC stand for?
IRC stands for Internet Relay Chat. Basically what that means is chatting by means of the internet, over the Internet.

C. Why download mIRC?
Well, if you want to explore IRC, why not do it with the best program around? And, it’s a fast and easy way to chat to people all over the world, and meet some new friends!

D. Requirements
Access to the Internet (Obviously you have access, since you’re reading this.)
A PC (with Windows only), with at least a few MB’s free space
About 10-20 minutes of your time

III. A Little about mIRC and IRC

A. Who made mIRC?
Well, to put it in the shortest way possible, quite a few people were involved in the creation of mIRC.

B. Who created IRC?
Well, the original IRC came from Jarkko Oikarinen I think, but there were also quite a few people helping him, and a separate group of people working on the IRCds.

IV. Downloading mIRC

A. mIRC’s Homepage
Okay, first thing to do is to go to the homepage of mIRC, at www.mirc.com. It should look something like this: Click Here

B. The Download Page
Now, go to the left, and look at the menu. There should be “Download mIRC” on it. Click on that. You should be brought to a page with a whole bunch of links, and locations and stuff. You should get mIRC 6.16. Click on the link that has the location that’s closest to where you live. It really doesn’t matter what location you pick, all the files are the same! Look here: Click Here

V. Setting it up

A. Setting it up
Now that you have it saved to a directory, open Windows Explorer and go there. You should see a file called “mirc616.exe”. Double-click on it. Keep clicking “Next >” until you get to the agreement thing. Click “Yes”. Install it to your favorite folder. While it’s installing, it should look like this:

VI. Connecting to the IRC server

A. Opening mIRC
Opening mIRC is simple, just double-click on the icon in the folder that you saved mIRC to. It should open a window asking for your name, email and nickname. Just enter in all that stuff, it’s pretty simple.

B. Connecting to a server
Ok, now you’re ready to connect. You’ll be connecting to the Anoxy IRC server.
Type this in the bar at the bottom where you type. (obviously xD): “/server irc.anoxs.net:6667”. That means you are connecting to irc.anoxs.net with the port 6667. Note: The :6667 is optional because the default port in mIRC is 6667, so "/server irc.anoxs.net " would work.

VII. Joining a Channel

A. Joining the main channel
You see the little box that pops up when you connect, labeled “Favorites” (See HERE) ? Yeah, in there enter #anoxs and click OK. You should joint the channel named #anoxs. If you accidentally close that box though, to join a channel, type “/join #channamehere”. So, if I wanted to join #blah, I’d type “/join #blah”. Without the “” things again, of course. If you are kicked from a channel, you must use the /join command to rejoin the channel. Heres what it looks liek when your in a channel: Click Here

VII. Basic mIRC Commands

A. Leaving a Channel
If you want to leave a channel, you must type /leave #channamehere or /part #channamehere.

B. Quitting the server
To quit the server with a message, type /quit yourmessagehere. You should be disconnected from the server. You must type /server irc.anoxs.net:6667 to get back onto the Anoxs server.

C. Changing your Nickname
To change your nick, you must use the /nick command. For example, if you wanted to change your nick to “zeep”, you would have to type /nick zeep. Simple, really.

D. PMing someone
To send someone a private message, you must double-click on their name in the nicklist to the right, or you must type /msg nickhere messagehere. That will PM the person your message.

E. Noticing someone
To Notice someone, you must type /notice nickhere messagehere. They will receive your message right away.

F. Hopping the Channel
To hop the channel, which means to leave the channel and join in immediately after, you must type /hop. You do not need to add the channel name at the end, as it will automatically hop the channel that you are currently in. This does not work with servers.

G. Registering your Nickname
To register your nickname so noone can steal it, type /msg nickserv register passwordhere emailhere. This should automatically register your nickname with the password you selected.

H. Identifying to services
After you have registered your nick, and you disconnect then connect again, you must identify to services. Type /msg nickserv identify passwordhere. Please note the password has to be the same password you used to register your nickname.

I. Listing the channels
To list all the channels on the server, to see what one you want to join or whatever, type /list. It should open up a new window to list all the channels from that server.

IX. FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

A. WTF I can't connect to the server!
Double-check you have the correct server name and port. If you still can't connect, check your Internet connection. If those are both all right, the server is probably down.

B. I can't change my nick!
If you can't change your nick, it's probably because you didn't identify and services changed it, someone else is using it or there is illegal characters in your nick.
If it says it is already in use, try /msg nickserv ghost yournickhere passwordtoyournickhere. If you get the error that it's not in use, then try /msg nickserv release yournickhere passwordtoyournickhere. Otherwise, ghosting should work.
